De la crise de novembre 1943 qui faillit aboutir au divorce avec la France a la Revolution Blanche de septembre 1952 qui entraina la demission du chef de l'Etat, trois ans avant la fin de son second mandat. Membre fondateur de la Ligue arabe et des Nations-Unies, le pays se dote d'une armee qui connait son bapteme du feu en 1948. D'emblee, le Pouvoir opte pour la libre economie de marche, rendant inevitable la rupture monetaire et douaniere avec une Syrie dirigiste. Il doit resorber les flots de refugies, preserver la cohesion interne, contrer les projets unionistes hachemites, vehicules localement par le PPS, tout en s'adaptant aux brutaux changements de regime a Damas... Les premieres pressions de la guerre froide naisante, couplees a des derives internes, finiront par balayer avant terme un regime dont le neuf ans, marques par quinze ministeres et trois legislatures, sont exposes dans les 464 pages du present ouvrage.
