يتضمن هذا الكتاب أبحاثاً هي في حقيقتها جامعة محررة عن حكم الإسناد والعمل بالحديث الضعيف، وحال كتب الحديث المسندة، وما يحتج به منها، ودفع تعارض أقوال المحدثين، ومباحث النسخ والجمع والترجيح، مع تجلية دقيقة لمباحث شائكة من علوم الحديث. وقد كان تأليف الإمام اللكنوي لهذا الكتاب جواباً منه عن أسئلة عشرة، سأله عنها أحد كبار العلماء من معاصريه وهو العلامة "محمد حسين اللاهوري"؛ بعث بها من "لاهور" إلى "حيدر آباد الدكن" حين كان الإمام اللكنوي مقيماً بها.
هذا وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً بقلم "عبد الفتاح أبو غدة" وتجلى عمله بالتحقيق بـ: تفصيل جمل النصّ، وترتيب عباراته. تخريج نصوصه التي جمعها المؤلف، التعليق على النصوص، صناعة فهارس عامة، تدوين ترجمة موجزة تعرف بجوانب من حال المصنف وعصره الذي عاش به.
