لا بد لقارئ هذا الكتاب من أن يدرك، وبسرعة، أنه في حضرة نصوص ليست من المألوف بشيء، أما سبب البعد هذا، فيعود إلى موضوعها الرئيسي، ألا وهو الصمت، وسيلاحظ القارئ، بسرعة أيضاً، أنه لا يتعامل مع خواطر واعتبارات وقصائد عن الصمت، لمعنى أن الصمت قد يغدو موضوع دراسة. ولكن، وبالأحرى فإن صفحات هذا السفر مستوحاة هي من الصمت التأملي، ومنثقة منه، فأنشودة الصمت الرائعة، مثلاً، ليست قصيدة مكتوبة لنستحضر الصمت، كما نصف شيئاً ما، إنها نشيد للصمت، بمعنى أنه صادر عن ذاك الفضاء الداخلي المتولد، هو نفسه من اختبار سكون النفس.
والأنشودة هذه تترجم حالاً للروح تفقد فيها الكلمات وظائفها العادية. ففي الحياة اليومية، تنقل الكلمات اختبارات شائعة مثل: "حلمت حلماً جميلاً" كان الطعام ممتازاً، إنها جمل تنقل أنباء "مألوفة عند القائل والسامع معاً، فكلاهما يحلم، يأكل ويفكر مراراً".
