لا يخفى على القارئ أن مدينة كربلاءهي محط أنظار المفكرين والباحثين، وهي حافلة بمشاهد العترة الطاهرة من ذرية الرسول الكريم محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، وفيها عدد كبير من الأضرحة للأولياء المقدسين، وهي بمبانيها وآثارها التاريخية ومساجدها وجوامعها وأطلالها الأثرية المهمة، ولهذه الأماكن تاريخها الذي يمتد إلى القرن الرابع الهجري. وباستطاعة الزائر أو السائح أن يتزود بمعلومات كافية عنها. لما فيها من نفائس الآثار والنقوش والكتابات التاريخية الشيء الكثير. وقد عني بهذه الآثار العرب والمسلمون والأجانب من المستشرقين وعلماء الآثار قديماً وحديثاً عناية فائقة بوصف المدينة والكتابة عن خططها ومعالمها التي ما تزال ماثلة للعيان أمام أعين النظار، وقد صارت معلماً شاخصاً يشار إليها بالبنان.
وفي هذا الكتاب إلمام بتاريخ هذه المراقد والمزارات من خلال الزيارات الميدانية لها حيث تم الاعتماد على المصادر التي تناولت تاريخها والتي ألفت من قبل، كما وفيه تبيان لخصائص ومميزات تلك المزارات وكيفية بنائها ووصف محتوياتها واستعمال الكتابات والخطوط وتاريخ التشييد والتجديد وقياساتها والنقوش التي زينت جدرانها وأبوابها وسقوفها.
