يعتبر هذا الكتاب من الكتب المهمة، التي تنتمي لأدبيات ثقافة التفاوض كما انه يتناول عملية التفاوض بالتحليل من زواية نظرية الحاجات Theory of needs لعالم الاجتماع الشهير Abraham maslow، وهو منظور مهم، نستطيع من خلاله تحديد منطلقات ودوافع وأولويات التفاوض الرئيسية لمفاوض ما.. وهو الأمر يمكننا من تقييم الاستراتيجية الملائمة لتحقيق افضل ناتج تفاوضي فريد، وأن نخرج به من موقف تفاوضي ما.
ويذكر نيرنبرج أن تحديد الاستراتيجية الخاصة بالمفاوضات، طبقا لنظرية الحاجات ومبادئها يشمل ثلاثة مستويات رئيسية، وهي: مستوى الافراد، مستوى المنظمات، مستوى الدول. وان المفاوض في هذة المستويات قد يعمل على إشباع حاجاتة أو حاجات خصمة، أو الاثنين معا. وقد يعمل ضد حاجاتة او حاجات خصمة او الاثنين معا.
ويقدم الكتاب عديدا من الوسائل التي يمكن للمفاوض أن يوظفها ليستفيد منها في تحقيق اهدافه وإشباع حاجات المنظمة او الدولة التي يمثلها في موقف تفاوض، وكذلك يتسم هذا الكتاب بوجود مسائل وحالات تطبيفية في كل فصل من فصول الكتاب.
