يحتفي الكتاب بدراسة أشكال الوعي الجمالي في السرد القصصي العربي خلال النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، فهي مرحلة شهدت نشوء مفهوم الدولة الحديثة في المنطقة العربية، وسعى فيها الأدب إلى إثبات الذات ووعي القيم وسط التغيرات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والسياسية، والتطورات الصناعية والحضارية.
تندرج هذه الأشكال ضمن قيم الجميل والقبيح والمعذب، كما تتجلى في وعي كل من عنصري الزمن والمكان جمالياً على نحوٍ خاص، بما يرصد القيم الإنسانية والمعاناة الفردية أو الجماعية ويوصل وجهة نظر إلى المتلقي. ويبرز في السرد القصصي العربي حضور الوعي الجمالي بشكل كبير عند الشخصية بوصفها مكوناً سردياً. في حين يؤدي باقي عناصر القصة كالمكان والزمن والصراع أدواراً متفاوتة في تعميق الوعي.
يتجه وعي الجميل إلى أن المرأة هي القاسم الجميل المشترك في نقاط كثيرة، مما يبيّن المفارقة بين تحقق وعي الجميل في شخصيات القصة ومصاعب الواقع حولها وآلامه، وذلك من خلال دراسة كل من المرأة ومفاهيم الفقر والحياة والحب والجمال المثال. ويتناول وعي القبيح ظواهر تُخالف هيئتها الأليفة لتبدو في شكلٍ آخر يمكنها من التلاؤم مع القبح المحيط بها، كالمرأة الأفعى، والطيور المخيفة. كما يركّز الكتاب على الإنسان الذي يعي عذابه، فالإنسان هو محور الوعي الجمالي.
