تجري أحداث الرواية في قصر أرستقراطي في مدريد عشية الحرب الأهلية الإسبانية. إذ ترج دوقة آرلانثا صاحبة البيت باستعراضها الجنسي إحساس الجنائني الخلقي. وهذا الجنائني آخر قن في سلم القيم الاقطاعية الذي كان ما يزال سائداً في ذلك العصر. يوم18 تموز 1936 شهد بداية انقلاب وتحول في العلاقات الاجتماعية. فيستولي عناصر الميليشيا على القصر الذي تختبئ فيه الدوقة. حبكة الرواية ذات طابع معقد وإشكالي وذو كثافة رمزية موحية: الدوقة هي المثال أي اسبانيا التقليدية, والجنائني هو العنصر الاسباني البسيط والبطل القوي, وهذه قصة بمضمون إنساني: تزول العبودية لكن المهم بالنسبة للبطل ان ينقذ الدوقة و يتحول إلى ملك الى جانب ملكة بعيدة المنال.
