دخلت الرواية العربية السورية المعاصرة مرحلة جديدة من مراحل تطورها الذي قطعته منذ نشأتها في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر، وأعلنت تحولها ضمن سيرورة المثاقفة وهواجس النهضة، وإيقاع التصنيفات الإجتماعية، وتبدل القيم، وتوالد اللغات داخل اللغة الواحدة، الأمر الذي أعطى للرواية مكانة مميزة وحساسية لأنها الشكل التعبيري الأقدر على إلتقاط صور وعلامات التحولات، من خلال كتابة التاريخ العميق الخفي المميز بالزمن المعيش، وبأسئلة الإنسان العربي داخل تاريخه الحديث المتسارع الإيقاع، المزدحم بالأحداث والهزات.
وقد رافق هذه التحولات في الكتابة الروائية إهتمام النقد الحديث بدراسة الشخصية في الأدب، كجزئية يصل من خلالها الدارس إلى إنفتاحات نصية متعددة، تتيح له رؤية كاملة ومتنوعة، ولأن الصورة لا تتحقق إلا داخل النص الروائي اتجهت الدراسات النقدية نحو الصورة الروائية، ويقصد بها الصورة الأدبية، وتحديداً النثرية منها، التي تهتم بالبحث عن العلاقة بين الشخصية، وبين المجتمع الذي أنتجها، من خلال صورة نثرية يتم التركيز فيها على شخصية معينة - كما في هذه الدراسة - أو حدث خاص للبحث في هذه العلاقة دون الوقوف عند تنميط هذه الصورة فقط، وإنما وصولاً إلى ربط هذه الصورة بجملة من المكونات الروائية من فقرة ومشهد وأحداث وفضاء وشخصية وموضوع وإنطباع ذهني ونفسي.
واللافت للنظر في الرواية السورية، وجود بعض التجارب الروائية التي اتخذت من صورة الرجل محوراً أساسياً لها في نقد المجتمع وبحث قضاياه الموضوعية سواء، أكانت قضايا سياسية أم إقتصادية أم إجتماعية أم نفسية أم جسدية.
وعلى هذا تقوم الدراسة على الإختيار لأغلب النماذج الفنية الروائية، التي تغطي - أولاً - هذه الفترة، وتمثل بحق خطوات تطور صورة الرجل في فترة التسعينيات، دون إغفال لمستواها الفني، فمن السمات المميزة لمنجز التسعينيات، خروج الأغلب الأعم من عباءة ما سبقه، وإن بدا أن ثمة محاولات لم يكتف أصحابها بتمثل الإرث الكبير الذي وجدوه أمامهم، بل تجاوزوا ذلك، بالإضافة إلى التأسيس عليه الإضافة له.
