لقد كانت الطبعة الأولى من كتابنا الذى نقدم له اليوم عن "الشخصية العربية" محاولة للتصدى للهجمة الشرسة التى قادتها إسرائيل لتشويه صورة العرب فى العالم عقب هزيمة يونيو 1967. وقد تميزت هذه الهجمة باستخدام "العلم الاجتماعى"، لغته فى صورة سيل دافق من البحوث والدراسات "العلمية" الاجتماعية التى انطلقت من مفهوم عنصرى يروج للعبقرية الإسرائيلية الغربية ويهون من قدر الشخصية القومية العربية. ولقد كان الهدف سياسياً فى المقام الأول، ويتمثل فى شن حرب نفسية ضد العرب لإقناعهم أن هزيمتهم فى يونيو 1967 هى هزيمة نهائية، وأن عليهم أن يخضعوا إلى الأبد للسيطرة الإسرائيلية، لأنه ليس هناك أمل فى أن يستطيعوا النهوض من جديد.
لضرب هذا الهدف الإسرائيلى، ولبث اليقين فى صفوف الشعب العربى بأننا نستطيع أن ننهض من كبوتنا، لكى نحارب من جديد لاستعادة الأراضى العربية المحتلة، ولإنتزاع أرض الشعب الفلسطينى من أيدى إسرائيل، ولتأكيد حقه فى تقرير مصيره وإقامة دولته المستقلة، تعرضنا بشكل شامل ونقدى لجذور العداء التاريخى إزاء العرب فى الفكر الغربى، وامتداداته فى الفكر الإسرائيلى، ومن ناحية أخرى تعرضنا "لصورة الذات" العربية كما تنعكس فى الأدبيات العربية بنفس المنهج النقدى.
