يشكل الحديث الصحفي - والذي يطق عليه بعض الكتاب تسمية المقابلة الصحفية - جوهر العمل الصحفي المعاصر، إذ تستند معظم الفنون الصحفية المعروفة على الحديث الصحفي أو المقابلة الصحفية؛ في الحصول على المعلومات والبيانات والحقائق والآراء والمواقف التي يمكن أن تتضمنها المادة الصحفية التي تحملها هذه الفنون الصحفية، فكثير من المواد الصحفية التي تنشر في الصحف والمجلات، يعتمد في الحصول على مادتها على مقابلة صحفية أو أكثر مع الأشخاص الذين يرتبطون بالحدث أو الواقعة أو شهود العيان وسواهم، كما أن المقابلة الصحفية تعد من الأمور الجوهرية في فن التحقيق الصحفي؛ إذ عن طريقها يتم الحصول على المعلومات التي يتطلبها التحقيق من المصادر التي يطلق عليها المصادر الحية، وتمثل هنا الأشخاص الذين يرتبطون بصورة مباشرة أو غير مباشرة بالموضوع أو الذي يتمحور حول التحقيق الصحفي.
وقد جاء هذا الكتاب ليتناول كل ما تقدم في ستة فصول توزعت على النحو التالي: الفصل الأول: وجاء تحت عنوان: مفهوم الحديث الصحفي وأهدافه وخصائصه ووظائفه ومصادره، وحمل الفصل الثاني عنوان: أنواع الحديث الصحفي والمقابلة الصحفية، في حين جاء الفصل الثالث بعنوان: متطلبات إعداد الأحاديث والمقابلات الصحفية وسبل نجاحها، أما الفصل الرابع فقد كان تحت عنوان: أنواع أسئلة الأحاديث والمقابلات الصحفية وأساليب إعدادها وتحديدها وصياغتها، وركز الفصل الخامس على: مراحل إعداد الأحاديث والمقابلات الصحفية وخطوات إجرائها وتنفيذها، وأما الفصل السادس، فقد اختص بتناول: أسس كتابة الأحاديث والمقابلات الصحفية وتحريرها.
