ويتخذ العمل التطوعي شكلين؛ فردي وآخر مؤسسي، والعمل المؤسسي أكثر تقدماً من العمل الفردي وأكثر تنظيماً وأوسع تأثيراً في المجتمع، إذ إنه يسهم في جمع الجهود والطاقات الإجتماعية المبعثرة، ويجعل منها جهوداً مؤثرة وفعالة.
ويدخل العمل التطوعي مجالات كثيرة ومتعددة؛ أبرزها مجال الدعوة ومجال الخدمات الإجتماعية، والتعليم والتدريب، والصحة، والأمن ومحاربة الجريمة، والبيئة، والإغاثة، وأخيراً المجال الإقتصادي.
بينت الدراسة دور العمل التطوعي في التنمية الإقتصادية، من خلال دوره في زيادة الإنتاج في الأجلين القصير والطويل، وفي إعادة توزيع الدخل وأثره في الإستهلاك، والإستثمار، والتعليم، والصحة.
