لقد أدركت المؤسسات الحديثة سواء كانت حكومية كالوزارات والدوائر الرسمية او غير حكومية كمنظمات المجتمع المدني، أهمية دراسة صورتها السائدة في أذهان الجماهير وإتخاذ القرارات ورسم الخطط الكفيلة بتكوين هذه الصورة على النحو الذي تتمناه هذه المؤسسات، بحيث أصبح تكوين الصورة الذهنية الإيجابية هدفاً أساسياً تسعى العلاقات العامة لتحقيقه على أي مستوى وفي أي مجال، ولرغبة الباحث في دراسة الصورة الذهنية من حيث المفهوم والجذور ودور وسائل الإعلام في بنائها ووسائل وأساليب تكوينها في العلاقات العامة، فقد تم التصدي لهذا الموضوع بالبحث والدراسة.
