تُعدًّ الصورةُ الذهنيةُ للحزب السياسي من القضايا المهمة التي يثار حولها الحديث، والتي تشغل الرأي العام، سواء كان ذلك على مستوى المجتمع المحلي أم المجتمع الدولي، كما أنها تشغل بالدرجة الأولى الأحزاب السياسية نفسها، لما تمثله تلك الصورة من معرفة المسافة بين الجمهور والحزب من جهة، وبين المحتوى الفكري للحزب، والممارسة الفعلية له على أرض الواقع.
وتكمُن أهميةُ الكتابة في موضوع الصورة المتولدة لدى الجمهور عن الحزب السياسي وعوامل تكوينها، من خلال كونها تأتي غالباً في صورتين؛ إحداهما تمثل الواقع أو تحاكيه، بينما الأخرى تمثل واقعاً مشكّلاً بُني على مجموعة تصورات عقلية وإنطباعات ذهنية، وهذا يختلف بحسب بيئة الفرد الإجتماعية والثقافية والعوامل التي يتعرض لها، سواء كانت إعلامية أم حزبية، أم خبرات مباشرة وغير مباشرة، والتي من خلالها تتشكل الصورة الذهنية عن الأشياء، لتنطبع في الذهن بعد التعرض لها بقصد وبغير قصد، مما يدفع بالمتلقي إلى تدعيم إنطباعات أو حقائق قديمة أو تفنيدها أو تعديلها.
وإن لكل مؤسسةٍ أو هيئة صورة عقلية متكونة لدى الآخر، وقد تكون هذه الصورة إيجابية؛ أو سلبية؛ وهي صورة ذهنية، فإن تشكلت بنمطية تراكمية من صورة مشوهة أو سلبية حقيقية، سميت الصورة النمطية، ومن خلال الدراسة سنتعرف على الصورة الذهنية، والتي تمثل مجموعة حقائق توالت على شكل صور عقلية امتازت بنوع من الموضوعية والمصداقية، أما النمطية والتي هي مجموعة صور سلبية (حقيقية أو مشوهة) تؤكد كل واحدة منها الصورة التي قبلها، بمعنى أنها تتسم بالثبات السلبي.
وتأتي أهمية هذا الموضوع أيضاً، من كون الحياة الحزبية في بعض البلدان العربية كالعراق مثلاً قد نشأت مبكراً، واتسمت بالتعددية والتنوع، وقد مرّت الحياة السياسية بمراحلَ وعهودٍ تراجع فيها العمل السياسي الحزبي من خلال إستهداف السلطة له، أو بسبب الضغوط السياسية الأخرى، ليزدهر مرة ويخفت مرة أخرى، حتى صار العراق تحت حكم الحزب الواحد، وتم التضييق على العمل الحزبي للآخرين، بل وإلغاء وجود العمل الحزبي التنظيمي والسياسي والإجتماعي في العراق، بإستثناء بعض الفترات التي أعلنت السلطة قانون الأحزاب السياسية، إلا ان هذا القانون لم يُفض إلى تعددية حزبية، ثم انتهت هذه المرحلة بإحتلال العراق من قبل الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية 2003، وبداية نظام جديد تم تشكيله وفق رؤية النظام الغربي ومصلحته في المنطقة.
