يتألف هذا الكتاب من أقسام ثلاثة، خصصت كالتالي: أولها لتدوين تاريخ علم الانكساريات العربي وابن سهل الرياضي، والثاني للنصوص المثبتة (مرفقة بترجمة لها)، أما الثالث فللملاحظات المكملة الضرورية لاستيعاب النص وللفهارس. وقد انطلق الدكتور رشدي راشد في دراسته هذه من الروابط الوثيقة ما بين البحث الهندسي من جهة والبحث البصري والفلكي من جهة أخرى تلك التي بينتها دراسات ابن سهل والفوهي من خلال انكبابهما على دراسة إسقاطية الكرة.
هذه الدراسات تعدّ وبحق ميزة أعمال ذاك العصر الباهرة وقد وضح الدكتور رشدي على ضوئها كيف أن رياضي القرن العاشر طوّروا الهندسة الهلينيسِنية، واستحدثوا حقولاً هندسية جديدة، كالطرق الإسقاطية في هذا المجال، والهندسية الجبرية في مجال آخر. ومن ثم بيّن كيف أن ابن الهيثم في مجالي البحث والطرق المتبعَيْن قد أنهى إلى مدرسته، يمكّن الإلمام بأعمال ابن سهل من الإحاطة الموضوعية بها.
وتاريخ هذه المدرسة جوهري لمن يود الإحاطة بنقاط التقاء ابن الهيثم بها، وكذلك بمواقع تباينه وانقطاعه عنها. وهدف المؤلف من وراء عمله ومتابعته هذه هو تجنب الوقوع في الفخ المنصوب لمؤرخي ابن الهيثم؛ وذلك انطلاقاً من تحديد موقع دراساته حول المرايا والكرات والكواسر في مجمل مساهماته. هذا الفخ يتجسد بتصور ابن الهيثم وكأنه الوريث البارز المباشر لبطليموس، وبالانطلاق من هذا التصور لفهم أعماله وكأنها متابعة لأعمال العالم الإسكندري مع بعض التعارض والتباين المحدود معه.
