المدينة - كما تقررها المعاجم العربية - مأخوذة من مدن بالمكان أي أقام به - وهي من المساكن والأبنية - كما انها - في التعريف الحديث - حقيقة مادية مرئية في المظهر الأرض من حيث الكثافة السكانية والكتلة البنائية والبعد التاريخي والحيثية الإدارية.
والمدينة تاريخياً تعد وحدة تشكيلية قديمة خبرها المجتمع الإنساني منذ زمن يرجع إلى سبعة آلاف سنة، فهي أذن أصيلة ويؤكد هذه الأصالة كل من تناولها بالدراسة، فالمدينة بحق أعظم منجزات الإنسان الحضارية فقد عرفها الإنسان المدني منذ الألف الثالث قبل الميلاد.
وعليه، ليست المدينة بخبرة جديدة من التفكير الإنساني أنها قد جاءت - كما يعتقد بعضهم - نتيجة للثورة العلمية التي نبتت بذورها منذ أكثر من قرن بل هي خبرة قديمة.
ولقد عرفت حضارات الشرق القديم من سومرية وفرعونية أعرق المدن في هذا العالم، كما عرفتها الحضارات اليونانية والرومانية كذلك، ومن ثم يمكن أن تقرر إن العالم القديم كان عالم مدن وإن كانت كل مدينة تعد في حد ذاتها عالم قائم بذاته.
وتعتبر المدن في الواقع المعمل الذي يقوم فيه البحث عن الحرية فقد أصبحت قطباً جاذباً للمتطلعين للحياة الحضرية، ففي المدينة تظهر التطلعات الإقتصادية والإجتماعية الأمر الذي خبره الإنسان من خلال تاريخه الطويل.
ومؤدى ذلك أن المدينة وهي نتاج لجمهور والإنسان ترتبط ترابطاً عضوياً بطبيعته الساعيه نحو الحرّية، ممات جعلها خير شاهد على منجزاتها الثقافية الكبرى التي حققها بداخلها واكتسبت منها أسس إستمرارها، فهي إذن وحدة رئيسية تمثل الخلق الأصلي للجمهور.
