تعلمنا النقوش الصخرية والمواقع المنتمية إلى العصر الحجري الثاني المكتشفة في الصحراء، واحات درعة وباني، وفي الأطلسين الصغير والكبير أن الإنسان عمر هذه المناطق من عشرة آلاف سنة على أقل تقدير. على أنه ينبغي التذكير بأن ''الصحراء" كان يسودها وقتذاك مناخ رطب ويغطيها نبات كثيف، فعاش معمروها الأولون قناصين ومربى قطعان الماشية. تمت عملية التحوب – من منطقة خصبة إلى الصحراء- تدريجيا وامتدت عبر ثلاثة إلى أربعة آلاف سنة. وتشهد المتحجرات من أفراس النهر وأشجار السروفي تاسلي، ومتحجرات النبات الاستوائي في بعض المواقع الغربية في الصحراء وتماسيح مستنقعات درعة المنقرضة درعة المنقرضة بعيد 1934، وتشهد كل هذه المعطيات بأن حال الصحراء شديد الاختلاف عما هي اليوم. وقد انعكس هذا التغير على العنصر البشري فهجرها تدريجيا نحو الحواف الشمالية والجنوبية للصحراء.
