يضمّ هذا الكتاب دراسة أساسية وتعقيبات، تبحث الدراسة الأساسية في إشكالية رئيسية، تواجه مبادئ حقوق الإنسان، في العالم العربي والإسلامي. وهي مدى توافق حقوق المرأة المنصوص عليها في المواثيق الدولية مع حقوقها الرفيعة، لم يكن مطلقاً تخلف الدين، وإنما كان باستمرار وعبر جميع العصور، تخلف المسلمين أنفسهم، حين عجزوا عن استشعار التناقض بين مفهومهم وواقع حياتهم، ليسعوا إلى التوفيق بينهما عن طريق إعمال الفكر والاجتهاد والتطوير...
ولقد اختارت الدراسة؛ النظر إلى فكر المدارس والحركات الإسلامية والمذاهب الفقهية، بدلاً من أخذ رأي الإسلام مباشرة من خلال نصوص القرآن والسنة النبوية، لا لأن رأي هذه الجماعات يمثل الإسلام، أو لا يمثله، بل أن ذلك ليس من شأن الدراسة، وإنما لن هذه المواهب والتيارات، هي مؤتمر حيوي على المجتمعات. ونظراً لمحدودية الدراسة، فقد حصرت نفسها تحت مظلة الفكر الإسلامي السني، واستبعدت الفكر الشيعي، رغم أهميته وتأثيره القوي على المجتمع الإقليمي والدولي. أما التعقيبات على الدراسة فهي من إعداد مجموعة من الباحثين وتعالج العناوين التالية: حقوق المرأة رؤية قرآنية، توطئة لحقوق المرأة في الإسلام، المرأة في الإسلام، خلط الأوراق في حافظة العولمة، قراءة مهمومة، حقوق النساء التائهة بين التوجهات الدينية والعلمانية، إقرار المرجعية العالمية لحقوق المرأة: هو المعركة، حقوق المرأة بين القانون الدولي وفكر الحركات الإسلامية مروراً بالتاريخ.
