هذه الفكرة نبتت أمامي على الورق، في أول محاولتي لكتابة رواية عن الحرب... ليس عن الحرب تماماً، وإنما عن الموت، ليس عن الموت تماماً، وإنما عن إمكانية الحياة بين قنبلتين.
يُحكى أنه كان هنالك طائر كبير أبيض، يشبه طائر البجع، في عنقه جعبة تتسع لأكثر من ليتر من الماء ينقله إلى فراخه من مسافات بعيدة.
عندما يرى حريقاً، وهو يطير فوق الغابات، يصبح هذا الطائر إطفائياً، يروح ويجيء بين البحيرة والغابة... يرش فوق النار الماء.
لا أدري إن كان ضرورياً للطائر الأبيض أن يملأ جعيته، بدلاً من الماء، بأسئلة جنائية: مَنْ أشعل الغابة؟ مَنْ أدار عليها الرياح الأربع؟ ومن سيزرع مكان صنوبرتنا العزيزة واحدة أخرى؟...
وسأضيف الآن، وقد مضت سنوات على هذه الحرب، قصة العصفور المستلقي على ظهره، رافعاً قدميه إلى الأعلى، عندما سِّئِلَ عما دعاه لهذا الوضع غير الطبيعي؟ فأجاب: سمعت أن السماء ستسقط، فقررت أن أسندها...
