في هذا البحث متابعة تاريخية لتطوّر الحدود النحويّة ودراسة لها من جهة العنوان والمضمون، وقد تكلمتُ كل على حده في ثلاثة نقاط.
النقطة الأولى: ذكرت فيها الألفاظ المتعددة التي عبّر بها النحاة عن المعنى الإصطلاحي، ذلك أن معظم هذه الحدود لم يوضع لها عنوان معين منذ البداية، بل عبّر عنها بعدة عناوين، إلى أن استقر التعبير عنها بالتدريج بعناوينها المتعارفة الآن في كتب النحو.
فالمصدر مثلاً عبر عنه بخمسة ألفاظ: هي: الفعل، المصدر، الحدث، الحدثان، المعنى، والنحو: عبّر عنه بــ: النحو، الكلام العربية، الإعراب، اللحن، المجاز.
النقطة الثانية: أوردت فيها المعاني اللغوية للعنوان الإصطلاحي النحوي، وبيّنت أوقفها وأنسبها له.
النقطة الثالثة: ذكرت فيها الصياغات المختلفة للحدّ حسب تسلسلها الزمني، ذلك أنّ صياغة الحدّ لم تتخذ شكلها النهائي إلاّ بعد أن مرّ بمراحل عديدة من التطوّر، وقد بلغت الحدود التي تكلمت عليها في هذا البحث ثلاثة وستين حداً، وهو العدد الذي أتاحه لي جهدي ووقتي، وقد سجلتها في الكتاب مرتبة على حُروف المعجم، راجياً أن أكون قد ساهمت في تقديم خدمة للمشتغلين بالدراسات النحويّة شاكراً الله عزّ وجلّ على ما وفقني إليه من الصواب، ومعتذراً عما يكون قد وقع فيها من زلل أو نقص.
