الغاية من تحقيق هذه المخطوطة المسماة: مختصر تاريخ الأساقفة الذين رقوا مرتبة رئاسة كرسي الكهنوت الجليلة في مدينة بيروت هي التعرف من خلالها إلى حقبة مهملة إلى حد ما، من تاريخ بيروت في القرن التاسع عشر، وهي الفترة التي كانت فيها بيروت تخضع لحكم الأمراء الشهابيين وسطوة الوالي أحمد باشا الجزار. بالإضافة إلى ذلك فإن هذه المخطوطة تتضمن بعض المعلومات الجديدة عن تاريخ الطائفة الأرثوذكسية وعن الخصومات الحادة التي كانت قائمة بينها وبين طائفة الروم الكاثوليك إبان انقسام الكنيسة الشرقية. وقد تناول كثيرون من الكتاب المعاصرين هذا الموضوع؟ إلا أن عبد الله بن طراد البيروتي ينفرد عن سواه أنه من عامة الناس ولا بد أنه يتفاعل مع الأحداث بطريقة تختلف عن سواه من المؤرخين المعاصرين. وعبد الله شاهد عيان لبعض ما يروى فنرى من خلال تصوره للأحداث ما كان يعانيه أبناء بيروت من ظلم الحكام وتعديات عمالهم، كما يعطي صورة حية عن العلاقة المتقلبة بين الولاة العثمانيين وبين السكان وابتزاز الولاة لهم باسم الدولة، ويخبر عن التنافس على كسب ود الوالي وما يتبع ذلك من محسوبيات وغيرها من الأمور التي كان لها تأثير مباشرة على حياة الإنسان العادي في تلك الفترة. ولهذا التحقيق أهمية إضافية فهو معطي وجهة نظر مختلفة عن الوالي أحمد باشا الجزار. ويعتبر المحقق من القلة بين المؤرخين بشكل عام، والمسيحيين المعاصرين بشكل خاص، الذي أبرزوا حسنات أحمد باشا الجزار حتى أنه قال فيه:"أجرى [الجزار] عدالة بليغة في جميع آياته.
