الكتاب يؤرخ لنحو تسعةِ قرون من تاريخ المدينة المنورة وأحداثها، حيث درسها دراسةً شاملةً جغرافية وبشرية وطبغرافية، وترجم لكل شخصٍ جاء إلى المدينة المنورة وله شأنٌ، منذ الجاهلية حتى نحو 900هـ.
وشملت ترجمته معظم الخلفاء الراشدين والصحابة، والعلماء والأشراف، والفقهاء والمحدِّثين من أقطار العالم الإسلامي كافة، وإن من ينظر في هذا السِّفر الخالد يذهل للجهد الهائل الذي بذله المؤلف رحمه الله في تتبع سير هؤلاء العلماء والذي يعجز عنه اليوم علماء عصرنا بما توفر لديهم من الإمكانيات الفنية والتقنية على الحاسوب.
مع ملاحظة أن الجزء الثالث من هذا السِّفر كان مفقوداً، لم يطلع عليه أحدٌ من قبل، واليوم ينشر أول مرّةٍ عن مخطوطٍ فريدٍ من إحدى المكتبات التركية، وهو بخط مؤرخ مكة ابن فهد المكي، وتاريخه 904هـ أي بعد وفاة المؤلف بسنتين، وهو منقول عن نسخة بخط المؤلف السخاوي.
