صنف الإمام السخاوي كتابه هذا في تاريخ "طيبة" المدينة المنورة المخصوصة بالمزيد من الفضائل، مبيناً أحوال أهلها، ذاكراً من فطنها من الغرباء ولو سنة، بشرط أن يكون درس فيها أو حدّث أو أفتى بالطريقة المرضية، مضيفاً إلى ذلك ذكر جمع ممن وصف بمفتي الحرمين أو قاضيهما أو شيخهما.
وقد رجع في ذلك إلى ما ألف في المدينة من كتب حيث كان له ذكر لها فيها نهاية كتابه، وقد كان أول ما استهل به الكتاب ابتداءً سيرة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، مختصرة، نافعة مفيدة معتبرة. وكان مما حدا بالمؤلف إلى هذا الجمع أنه لم يجد في حينه مصنفاً حول أحوال أهل المدينة ورجالاتها يشفي الغليل فكان أن ألف هذا الكتاب الذي يعد مصدراً هاماً في هذا المجال.
