صحيح أن للنكتة أدبيات وقواعد خاصة بها في الأدب الضاحك، لكن الصحيح أيضاً أن لها جذوراً عميقة في حياة الشعوب تحدد الإطار العام لها، فهي بحكم استهدافها لهذا لشعب أو لطائفة منه أو شخص مجهول أو معلوم فيه، تأخذ شكلها العام والحالي متبلورةً من أنواع "فكاهية" تتناسب والعصر الذي وجدت فيه، ويمكن القول: إن المضحك والمبكي، لا يتغير إطاره العام، إنما الذي يتغير آلية تلقيهما.
والحمصي كإحدى الشخصيات البارزة في الأدب الضاحك المعاصر استهدُف منذ البداية ونُعت بالحُمق، لا بل صنّفه ابن الجوزي بين "الحمقى والمغفلين على الإطلاق". وعلى ذلك تركزت النكات على أهل حمص فيما بعد. وللعلم فإن ما وسِم به أهل حمص، بنته أحداث تاريخية مهمة عاشتها المدينة.
لقد خاضت حمص حرباً أيديولوجية فكاهية على مرّ تاريخها. ويبحث هذا العمل في جذور النكتة الحمصية من دون الدخول في تحليل النكات التي تروى عن أهل حمص، إلا ما تقتضي الإشارة إليه.
