يعد كتاب كعب الأحبار في الأصل أطروحة دكتوراه نال فيها إسرائيل ولفنسون درجة الدكتوراه من جامعة يوهان فولجانج جوته في ألمانيا عام 1993 وقد حملت العنوان الآتي: KAAB ALAHBAR Jews and Judaism the Islamic Tradition.
وكعب الحبار من الشخصيات القلقة التي تعددت فيها الآراء وتضاربت، فهو من مسلمة أهل الكتاب وشخصية مركّبة امتازت بحمولة معرفية وفكرية وفرتها طبيعة التحولات والانعطافات التاريخية التي مرّت بها عملية انتقالها من اليهودية إلى الإسلام؛ إذ وظف ذلك المخزون والتراكم الديني السابق في الدين الإسلامي الجديد؛ ولذلك عرفت إسهاماته على الرغم من حال الربية الذي يحوم حول بعضها بالعمق والجدارة.
ومما يلحظ على هذه الدراسة التي يقدمها إسرائيل ولفنسون تركيز وتكثيف على الدور الفكري ولاسيما في مضمار الرواية الإسلامية وتأثير ميراث الديانات الأخرى عليها فيلحظ فيها تنقيب ومقدرة كبيرة على متابعة الشبكة الفصلة من تلك الروايات التي أنتجها أو قام بنقلها كعب الأحبار إلى التراث الإسلامي فأوجد المؤلف نوعاً من الهيكلية والتصنيف المنظم لها على أسس زمانية وموضوعية للكشف عن حالات تطورها والتناصات التي اعتادت عليها مجمل المصنفات الإسلامية.
ويلحظ في الدراسة التلازم العالي بين متنها وهامشها الذي عُرف بانضباط عل في التوثيق والمتابعة مقارنة بدراسات أخرى أنتجها يراع المؤلف نفسه.
لكن ذلك لا يخفي بعض الميول والاعتداد المفرط أحياناً لدى المؤلّف بدور كعب في مجال بناء الرواية الإسلامية وإثرائها.
