الشعر يشتمل على الأفكار والتماعات الذهن، وعلى الوقائع والحكم والأمثال، وفي الوقت نفسه، فهو يشتمل على بيان لنزعات العاطفة والوجدان، وينقل الإحساس بها من الشاعر إلى القارئ أو السامع، بحيث يحس بها وكأنها تحدث له هو.
والشعر يُغلّف كل هذه الأفكار والصور والأحاسيس بغلاف شفاف من الموسيقى – موسيقى ظاهريّة ناتجة عن الوزن والقافية، أو موسيقى داخليّة تتصاعد بطريقة غامضة من التراكيب الداخليّة للأبيات، ومن معاني الكلام، لا من الآلات الموسيقيّة الوتريّة أو النحاسيّة.
