شهدت أوروبا وأمريكا حركة ثقافية وفنية وعمرانية نشطة في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر وبداية القرن العشرين، بأشكال ومنطلقات مختلفة، أسست فيما أسسته نمط أو أكثر من العمارة الحديثة.
الحداثة العمرانية في أمريكا بدأت بحدود 1900 "... عموماً من خلال أعمال فرانك لويد رايت والمعجبين فيه" (Fletcher's A History of Architecture John Musgrove - Editor, Banister).
هكذا ارتبط اسم فرانك لويد رايت (1867- 1959) بالحركة المعمارية الحديثة في أمريكا منذ نشأتها، ولاحقاً على النطاق العالمي كأحد المؤسسين للحداثة مع والتركروبيوس ومس فان دي رو ولاكوبوزيه وغيرهم.
هذه الشخصية المؤثرة والفذة في نشاطها المعماري، لها قصة مع العراق، قصة عشق وإرتباط فكري وخيال يعود بنا إلى أحلام ألف ليلة وليلة عندما زار رايت العراق في خمسينات القرن الماضي، وهو إبن التسعين، وصمم مبنى الأوبرا على جزيرة أم الخنازير وألحق بها تصميم لجامعة بغداد التي صممها لاحقاً ولتر كروبيوس.
إنها قصة تراث، حلقة من حلقات العمل التراكمي لنهوض العراق الجديد في منتصف القرن الماضي، ولكنها ككثير من حلقات التراث العراقي، أهملت ولم تجد الإهتمام الكافي في الدراسة والنقد.
المعمار الأكاديمي موفق الطائي، ومن خلال تجربته الأكاديمية الطويلة، وولعه بالتراث العراقي، وجد في فرانك لويد رايت مادة خصبة للدراسة والبحث، وجاء كتابه، جني بغداد، حافلاً بالمعلومات القيمة، علاوة على كونه مليء بالقصص الشيقة وكأنها فصول من رواية نستمتع بها مساءاً، ولربما يمكن أن أقول أنها عبارة عن عدد من المداخلات أو مختصر لمحاضرات عديدة.
وهذا الأسلوب ليس غريباً على موفق الطائي، فله عهد طويل وتجربة قيمة في المجال الأكاديمي.
