كان الاتجاه نحو الجانب التطبيقي في تعليم وتدريس الجغرافيا دافعًا هامًا نحو توجيه الجغرافيين لإبراز ماهية ومضمون العمل الجغرافي في ميدان خدمة المجتمع والبيئة ومن ثم فجغرافية التنمية تمثل مرحلة انطلاق على طريق مساهمة الجغرافية في إيجاد بيئة إنسانية أفضل.
وفي إطار هذه الموضوعية نهجت جغرافية التنمية منهجها فاختص الموضوع الأول بفلسفة التنمية وجغرافية التنمية حيث عمد إلى إبراز الدوائر المتشابكة التي تختص بدراسة موارد الأرض وموارد الإنسان الاقتصادية والإنسان ذاته وكيفية تحليل عناصر تلك الدوائر تحليلًا علميًا هادفًا لإيجاد بيئة أفضل الاستقرار والاستغلال للإنسان.
أما الموضوع الثاني فكان من الطبيعي أن يختص بدراسة العوامل المختلفة التي توجه التنمية والتي يجب أن تأخذ في الاعتبار أي محاولة للتنمية مهما اختلف زمانها أو مكانها وأن جملة هذه العوامل مرتبطة بالمسرح الجغرافي وبالإنسان الذي يمثل دورة فوق هذا المسرح. وفي هذا الصدد كان من الضروري إبراز المفاهيم الذهنية السائدة في المجتمع كعامل موجه للعملية التنموية وكمؤثر في منهجية وأسلوب العمل التنموي في بيئات العالم المختلفة.
وكان من الطبيعي أن تتطرق الموضوعات التي أعقبت الموضوع الثاني لدراسة الجوانب المختلفة في المجتمع ومن ثم تفرد موضوع لدراسة التنمية الزراعية وآخر للتعرف على التنمية الصناعية وثالث لمعالجة التنمية الحضرية.
ووفقًا لذلك جاء الكتاب في ستة موضوعات كالتالي: (الأول: الجغرافيا والتنمية، الثاني: العوامل المؤثرة في التنمية، الثالث: التنمية الزراعية، الرابع: التنمية الصناعية، الخامس: التنمية الحضرية، السادس: أنماط المدن وتخطيطها).
