إنَّ صورة الحرية وسط المتاريس والحواجز المحاصرة بها في اللوحة الشهيرة للرسام (يوجين ديلاكرو) تصلح لأن تكون حقاً رمزاً لمدينة باريس المتمردة.
إنَّ «الحواجز»، و«عاصفة سجن الباستيل» و«أحداث الثورة الفرنسية» هي بالواقع، شعارات مألوفة لدينا ومعروفة جداًً منذ أيام التعليم المبكرة الأولى في مدارسنا. فبواسطة تلك الشعارت، إذا جاز لنا التعبير، يستحضر كل واحد منا في ذهنه صورة مشرقة ومفعمة عن حياة هذا العصر في فرنسا. فنحن نتخيل سلسلة الأحداث المهيبة والمدهشة لذلك الفيضان الاجتماعي العظيم، الذي طرد الحكم الملكي، بعيداً مع كل امتيازاته الملكية كطبقة مترفة وقاد في الوقت نفسه إلى تشكيل نظام اجتماعي جديد.
إنَّ مجمل الشعب الفرنسي ثار وأعلن العصيان، ضد النظام الملكي القديم، برجوازيون وحرفيون وفلاحون وانتصروا في هذا الكفاح. ولكن حين نتأمل في تفاصيل تلك الثورة، فإنَّ من المهم جداًً أن نسبر ونفهم الأمر بعمق وأن نتعامل معه على أنه أكثر من مجرد مكاسب حققها الثوار بقلب النظام وإزالته، وأن لا نهمل أو نتغاضى بصمت عن موضوع هؤلاء الفلاسفة التنويريين الذين أسسوا وأورثوا الشعارات التي رفعت بواسطة المتمردين، هؤلاء الذين وضعوا المهام الملحة على كاهلهم وكاهل الفلسفة. بعبارة أخرى، هؤلاء الفلاسفة هم الذين مهدوا وعبدوا السبيل إلى الثورة عن طريق أفكارهم ومطالبهم الفكرية. وتنبغي الإشادة، أولاً وأخيراً، بهذه المجموعة الصغيرة من الكتّاب أو الفلاسفة التي التفت حول مشروع الأنسكلوبيديا، حيث تحددت هويتهم وعُرفوا فيما بعد بالأنسكلوبيديين. أما الشخصية الرئيسية واللاعب الأساس في هذه المجموعة فقد كان الفيلسوف دينس ديدرو.
