إن التصنيف في النحو اتسم بطابعين رئيسين: الطابع الأول: طابع نظري، والغرض منه بيان ما يمكن أن يسمى فلسفة النحو. كما بدت للنحويين، ككتاب "علل النحو"، و"نقص علل النحو" للغزة الأصبهاني والطابع الثاني: طابع تعليمي تطبيقي، وهو الغالب، والغرض منه عرض أبواب النحو ومسائله حتى يتسنى للدارسين الوقوف عليها، أملًا في استيعابها ومراعاتها عندما يتكلمون أو يكتبون أو يقرءون، ولا نريد بالطابع التعليمي كتب النحو الخاصة بتعليم المبتدئين، وإنما نعني به ما صنف في تطبيق لبيان الضوابط والأحكام. ولم تخلى المصنفات ذات الطابع التعليمي من آثار الطابع النظري، بل طمعت المطولات والشروح ببعض تلك الآثار بدءًا من كتاب سيبويه، وظلت بصماتها على صفحات المصنفات النحوية.
ومن هنا أقبلت على عمل- أعده مدخلًا- أقدمه للقارىء العربي- أجمع فيه بين الطابعين النظري والتعليمي، فعدت إلى التراث النحوي أتتبع الأصول النظرية التي اعتمد عليها النحويون في إقامة صرح النحو والأسس والثوابت التي استقر في بطون كتبه، ومنهجهم في عرض المسائل النحوية، وملاءمتهم كتبهم، وملامح التيسير والتعقيد فيها. وآثرت عرض الكثير من الآراء والكتب في الطابعين النظري والتعليمي مع اقتطاف نصوص منها. وقد جعلت الكتاب قسمين: تناولت في القسم الأول الطابع النظري، وذلك في بابين: الباب الأول: أصول النحو وجدله، السماع، والقياس، والاستصحابن الباب الثاني: الأسس والقضايا النحوية: الإعراب، والعامل، والتعليل، والضرائر الشعرية، وتناولت في القسم الثاني الطابع التعليمي، وذلك في أربعة أبواب: الباب الأول: التبويب والترتيب، والباب الثاني: عرضنا فيه للمستوى والمحتوى، الباب الثالث: عرضنا فيه اتجاهات أخرى في التصنيف التعليمي، الباب الرابع: خصصناه للمجال التطبيقي.
ونأمل أن نكون بهذا العمل المتواضع قد ألقينا ضوءًا على جزء من التراث النحوي يعين المتخصصين والدراسين والمثقفين عامة.
