لقد ضاع الآن الكثير من آثار وادي الملوك التي نسخها الزائرون بالألوان الجذابة خلال القرن الماضي، سواء اختفى تماماً أو شوه على نحو لا يجعله معروفاً. ولقد أغلقت في عام 1979 مقبرة سيتي الأول التي تعد من أهم الآثار التي يزورها كل السياح تقريباً، ولكن هذا الإنذار بالخطر لم يلتفت إليه أحد فعلاً، فقد وجهت جماهير الزوار إلى مقابر أخرى مهددة هي الأخرى بالدمار التدريجي. والأسوأ من الحماية غير الكافية لهذه الآثار عدم المبالاة التي يبديها هؤلاء والزوار للوادي الذي يعتبر أكبر متحف في الهواء الطلق في العالم كله. فإذا كانت الأشياء المنقولة التي وجدت في مقابر الوادي يبدو أنها أنقذت إذ لا تزال كما هي محمية في خزائن المتحف المصري بالقاهرة، إلا أن معظم الكنوز الثمينة التي لا تزال في الوادي تواجه الخطر الشديد، وأحد أغراض هذا الكتاب دق الناقوس للتنبيه لهذا الخطر. ويضم هذا الكتاب لأول مرة نتائج ومشاكل ما تمخضت عنه عشرات السنين من العمل في وادي الملوك. وقد تمّ في هذا الكتاب توجه الاهتمام بصفة أولية إلى المناظر والنصوص الدينية التي زينت بها المقابر، مع عدم تجاهل التطور المعماري وقوانينه النسبية التي كانوا يراعونها بدقة متناهية. إن هناك سطوراً طويلة من الكتابة الهيروغليفية والصور غير المألوفة تغطي جدران المقابر الحجرية والذي يزيح عنها الستار ويكشف ما كان مجهولاً منها حتى الآن سوف ينتابه نفس الشعور الذي صدم الأثريين وهم يمعنون النظر في الكنز المتألقة التي كانت تضمها تلك الغرفة الصغيرة في مقبرة توت عنخ آمون، لكن المؤلف لت يتحدث في كتابه هذا عن الكنوز الجوالة في مقبرة توت عنخ آمون إلا على نحو هامشي، إذ أن اهتمامه انصب على كنوز أخرى في الوادي، وما كان قاصراً في الماضي على جمهور محدود في شكل نصوص وترجمات وتعليقات يقدم الآن إلى جمهور عريض تؤيده أكبر نخبة ممكنة من الصور والنقوش التي ظلت غير معروفة تقريباً حتى في الدوائر العلمية.
