اعتمدت الدراسة، قدر الإمكان، على المصادر العربية الأصيلة، ومن بينها كثير من المنشورات السرية والنشرات والرسائل. كما أنها تقدم بعض الدلائل الواقعية على الحركة الأصولية من خلال تحليل إحدى وتسعين جمعية أو جماعة إسلامية. قام بجمع المادة العاملون في مركز هيئة البحث والتنمية. هذه الدراسة التي بدأت على شكل تقرير لحكومة الولايات المتحدة، أعيد فيها النظر ووسعت بشكل كبير لتشمل إطار للعمل شاملاً وتحليلاً، وتضم معطيات جديدة عن التطورات الأخيرة في المنطقة العربية.
