يبحث هذا الكتاب في أدب السيرة الذاتية، ويختار مؤلفاه أعمالاً كانت لروائيين لهم تجربتهم في هذا الحقل السردي، وهم من الأسماء المعروفة والمشهود لتجاربها في السرد الروائي كحنا مينا ونوال السعداوي، وسهيل إدريس، وعبد الرحمن منيف، وحليم بركات، ومراد السباعي، ونجيب محفوظ وغيرهم.
مهّد المؤلفان للبحث بتمهيد أولي ليكون فاتحة يمكن الولوج عبرها إلى أعماق البحث وجوهره، ومن ثم استعرضا الإرهاصات التي حاولت أن تشد هذا الجنس الأدبي إلى أصول العربية، وعرضا لاتجاهين الأول يقول أصحابه: بأن هذا الجنس هو جنس عربي محاولان البحث في التراث العربي عن أشكال تقاربه، ليعدّوها من أدب السيرة الذاتية، فإذا بهم يدخلون كتب التاريخ وكتب الأدب وكتب السير كلها ضمن هذا المجال. والإتجاه الثاني الذي يرى أصحابه: أن هذا الجنس إنما هو غربي المنشأ والأصل شأنه شأن القصة والرواية والمسرحية، وأن النص التأسيسي في الغرب كان باعترافات جان جاك روسو، أما النص التأسيسي العربي فقد كان بكتاب الأيام لطه حسين.
بعد ذلك، تحدث المؤلفان عن السيرة الذاتية في الأدب العربي الحديث وبيّنا بعدها مفهوم السيرة الذاتية من خلال عرض لبعض الآراء التي حاولت أن توجد تعريفاً لهذا الجنس السردي، بعد ذلك وقف المؤلفان عند مفهوم الصدق وعدمه في السيرة الذاتية بهدف الوصول إلى خصائص النص السير ذاتي وشروطه ودوافعه، ثم بحثا في العلاقة بين السيرة الذاتية والرواية، متناولين نماذج من روايات السيرة الذاتية مثل (الإخلاص للفن، الإخلاص للسيرة في ثلاثية حنا منية) ، و (محمد شكري بين حياة الجوع والجوع إلى الحياة) ، ووقفا أيضاً عند سيرة منفردة هي (سيرة مدنية عبد الرحمن منيف) وفي النهاية أفردا فصلاً للسيرة الذاتية النسائية، عن قناعة تامة بالإبداع أياً كان كاتبه رجلاً كان أم امرأة، فكانت الدراسة من نصيب (أيديولوجية السيرة في أوراقي حياتي لنوال السعداوي، ورحلة جبلية صعبة للشاعرة فدوى طوقان). وختم البحث برؤية لهذا الجنس الأدبي الجديد.
