لما كانت الرواية جنساً تعبيرياً مفتوحاً، يستمد من الأجناس الأدبية الأخرى، بعض عناصرها لنا، فإن دراسة الخطاب في الرواية، تنسحب -بالضرورة- على سائر الأجناس الأدبية التى تعتمد اللغة في إنشائها، وهذا الدرس التأسيسي -الذى نقدمه للقارئ العربي- يرتكز على أطروحتين رئيسيتين:
الأولى: دحض المفاهيم التي أفضت إلى دراسة الأجناس التعبيرية باعتبارها وحدات منعزلة متجاهلة أبعادها التاريخية والاجتماعية، أو التي بحثت فقط فى مجال اللغة/ اللفظية، ذات البعد الواحد الذي يخلقه ويحدده -منفرداً- الكاتب وبالتالي تجاهلت حياة اللفظية عبر أحقاب تاريخية وتشكلات اجتماعية قبل أن تستقر في ذاكرة الكاتب. ويروّح لهذه المفاهيم الشكليون والأسلوبيون "التقليديون" [كما يصفهم باختين].
الثانية: تخطي القطيعة التي كرستها أجيال عديدة من دارسي الأدب بين ما هو "شكلي" وما هو "إيدولوجي" لكون الشكل والمضمون شيئاً واحداً داخل الخطاب الذي يعد ظاهرة اجتماعية ضمن سياقة التاريخي، وبلإضافة إلى هذا فإن "باختين" يقدم درساً هاماً فى إجراءات التعامل مع نص روائي في الفصل الخاص بتحليل رواية :البعث" لتولستوي، كما أنه يسعى -على مدار الكتاب- إلى تدمير الرؤى والأطروحات التي تكرس مطلقية اللغة وواحديتها، على حساب تعدديتها ونسبيتها ووجودها ضمن "كل" عضوي في إطار مجالات العمل الأدبي الدلالية.
