قبل نحو تسعة عقود، توجهت طالبة فنلندية تدعى هيلما غرانكفست (1890-1972) إلى قرية "أرطاس" إلى الجنوب من بيت لحم في فلسطين، حيث شهدت مسيرتها الشخصية والأكاديمية منعطفًا أساسًا بتحولها إلى دراسة حياة المرأة الفلسطينية. فوضعت خمس دراسات مونوغرافية رائدة عن "الأحداث الثلاثة الأهم في حياة البشر"، وهي الولادة والزواج والموت، في قرية أرطاس. ونشرت دراساتها باللغة الإنكليزية، ولم تترجم قط إلى العربية أو أي لغة أخرى. وتعد هذه الترجمة لدراستيها الأولى والثانية حول الزواج مصدرًا من أغنى مصادر التوثيق لحياة القرية الفلسطينية المتاحة للقارئ العربي.
يأتي "أحوال الزواج في قرية فلسطينية" في "سلسلة ترجمان" في نطاق مشروع متكامل لترجمة الدراسات المتعلقة بالتراث الشعبي الفلسطيني ونشرها. وتتجاوز أهمية هذا المشروع البعدين الأكاديمي والدراسي، لأن هذه الدراسات تقدم شواهد فذة على وجود نشاط إنسانيٍّ وافر في فلسطين في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر وحتى أواسط القرن العشرين، ناشئ عن مؤسسات وممارسات اجتماعية واقتصادية ودينية وفولكلورية حية معقدة التركيب ومغرقة في القدم. وهذه الدراسات التي وضعها مؤلفون أجانب مختصون عاشوا في فلسطين في تلك الفترة، تدحض دحضًا صريحًا المقولات الصهيونية القديمة والراهنة الرامية إلى محو الهوية الفلسطينية أو تشويهها أو انتحالها أو استلابها.
