يتكون هذا البحث الذي بين أيدينا والذي يتحدث عن الشاعر القطامي عمير بن شييم التغلبي وديوانه من مقدمة وتمهيد وثلاثة أبواب جاءت في سبعة فصول، في المقدمة تم تحديد موضوع البحث وكان دراسة عصر القطامي من نواحيه المختلفة ودراسة حياته في بيئته الخاصة، ثم تحقيق ديوانه ودراسة شعره، وبيان منزلته بين شعراء عصره.
وفي التمهيد تم الحديث عن الشعر مثيل القطامي وطبيعته من الناحية الموضوعية وكيف مثل الحياة الجاهلية في العصر الجاهلي مع بيان خصائص هذا الشعر من ناحية الخيال والألفاظ والأساليب، وكان موضوع الباب الأول عصر القطامي وحياته، وبيئته الخاصة، واتصاله بالناس وعلاقته بهم، أما الباب الثاني فخصص للنص، وجاء في فصلين الأول بعنوان ديوان القطامي، وفيه تم التكلم عن نسخ الديوان، وتم المقارنة بينهما، أما الفصل الثاني فاشتمل على نصر الديوان محققاً بعد أن تم تخريج أبياته، وضبط نصه، وإضافة ملحق بالأشعار التي لم ترد في الأصول. أما الباب الثاني فكان موضوعه شعر القطامي وفيه تم الحديث عن أغراض الشعر لدى القطامي، ومن ثم تم وضع تحليل فني لشعر القطامي، والحق بتقويم عام تم فيه المقارنة بينه وبين فحول عصره لأنه يتفق معهم في المنهج الشعري.
