The first thing you do when you go to school is learn the alphabet, the ABC; But did you know that the alphabet was invented by the Phoenicians, a race of sturdy navigators and adventurous sea traders who lived in ancient Lebanon?.
Although writing had existed in the ancient world before the time of the Phoenicians, a race of sturdy navigators and adventurous seas traders who lived in ancient Lebanon?.
Although writing had existed in the ancient world before the time of the Phoenicians, it was so complicated that it took a lifetime for scribes to master the numerous, intricate signs of the hieroglyphic and cuneiform scripts. Writing, therefore, was a scribal monopoly, limited to the hands of a few.
Then, around 1200 BC the Phoenicians developed a 22- letter phonetic alphabet where each sign represented a given sound. This invention not only simplified the art of writing but also brought it within the reach of all men.
The alphabet was carried by Phoenician navigators and merchants throughout the Mediterranean and even beyond, into the Atlantic.
In time it was passed on to the Greeks who gave it to the Romans. Without the Phoenician alphabet the history of Western civilization may have taken another turn.
So, let us start our guided tour of the National Museum together with the letters of the alphabet ABC.
