حمل العصر العباسي بذور التغيير والتجديد على المستويات كافة، مما أدى إلى تطور الأذواق، فاتحة الناس ينهلون من معطيات الحضارة الجديدة، ويتفاعلون معها، وكان من اثر ذلك التغيير ابتعاد القارئ العربي عن مطالعة المطورات الشعرية، واستعاض عنها بالمقطوعات القصيرة التي تتلاءم مع ذوقه من حيث الشكل والمضمون، وهكذا صار الشعراء يهتمون بالمقطوعات القصيرة، واكثر من ذلك اخذ بعض كبار الأدباء والنقاد يجمعون من القصائد ما يحلو لهم تلبية لرغبات الجمهور، ورتبوها حسب المعاني الشعرية لتشمل الأغراض المختلفة، واقدم ما عرفناه من هذه الاختبارات ما جمعه أبو تمام وأشتهر عند المتأخرين وعرف باسم "الحماسة" تسمية له بأول أبوابه، ويليه أبواب أخرى هي المراثي، والأدب، والنسيب، والهجاء، والمديح، والصفات، والملح، ومذمة النساء، ومن الملاحظ في هذا الديوان أن أبو تمام قد قصر اختياراته على شعراء الجاهلية وصدر الإسلام والعصر الأموي، وقد لوحظ وجود بعض المقطوعات لشعراء عباسيين مثل بشار بن بُرد، ودعبل الخزامي، وحماد عجرو، وقد تقبل أهل الأدب "حماسه" أبى تمام تقبلاً حسناً، فاهتموا بقراءتها وتدريسها وشرحها وتفسيرها وتحقيقها كما فعل "احمد حسن بسبح" الذي اعتمد في تحقيقه رواية الجواليقي التي حققها الدكتور عبد المنعم صالح وقارن متنها بما جاء من متن الخطيب التبريزي من خلال النسخة المطبوعة، فأثبت في متن الأصل ما لم يرد فيه من نسخة التبريزي وأشار إلى ذلك في موضعه كما أشار إلى الأبيات الواردة من متن الأصل ولم ترد متن التبريزي. أم التفسير والشرح فقد عني المحقق بتفسير المفردات الغامضة والغريبة، ثم أوجز المعنى المراد فيها وقد اعتمد في ذلك على المعجمات اللغوية، وبلسان العرب وشرح الخطيب التبريزي كما أنه عمد إلى تمييز المقطوعات الشعرية كلاً بالعنوان المناسب، إضافة إلى ضبط النصوص، والأوزان الشعرية حيث كان ذلك ضرورياً، هذا وقد ذيل الكتاب بفهارس ضرورية تعين على الإفادة من هذا السفر العظيم بسهولة.
