مر أبو تمام في إحدى رحلاته بهمذان فوقع ثلج عظيم قطع الطرق فكتب فيها خمسة كتب منها ديوان الحماسة في 884 مجموعة شعرية غالبها قصائد قصيرة تبلغ 7 أبيات أو تزيد عليها بقليل، وبعضها لا تبلغ ان تكون قصيدة، والخطيب التبريزي كان ممن شرح " الحماسة " ثم شرحه هذا الشرح الثاني بيتا بيتا من أوله الى آخره شرحا شافيا، مع بيان اشتقاق أسامي شعراء الحماسة وغيرهم ممن يجري ذكره في الكتاب، وتفسير ما في كل بيت من الغريب والإعراب والمعنى، واختلاف العلماء في ذلك
