كان قدماء المصريين علي دراية كبيرة بمواقع وحركات الاجرام السماوية، مكنهم ولاول مرة من تعيين طول العام وتاسيس التقويم وتوجيه المعابد والاهرامات، ولانهم اتخذوا من الشمس وبعض النجوم آلهة معبودة، كان عليهم ان يترقبوا بداية ظهورها ويتتبعوا مساراتها لكونها، كما كانوا يعتقدون، تمثيل حركو وإرادة الآلهة، وإتجاهات المعابد الاثرية خير دليل علي ذلك، بل إن المعابد في مناطق مثل الاقصر كانت بمثابة مراصد نجومية في عصور قبل التاريخ المتعاقبه.
وعلي يد الكهنة المصريين تعلم الوافدون من الاغريق، فازدهروا وزاع صيتهم مع مدرسة الاسكندرية، ثم نقلوا المعارف المصرية إلي بلادهم، كما برع عرب الاسلام في علم الفلك، فعلم يكتفوا بدراسة المعارف الفلكية الاغريقية، بل تحققوا منها وصححوها واضافوا إليها، وكانت تلك الثروة العلمية بمثابة النبع الذي نهلت منه الحضارة الغربية في إرساء دعائمها، ويبدوا ذلك جلياً فيما بقي وتأصل من ألفاظ عربية في اللغات الاوربية.
وعندما بدأ الشرق يهتم ثانية بالعلوم ويحس ضرورة مسايرة الحضارة، إذ به امام فجوة علمية شاسعة، إستلزم إجتيازها ان نلعب دور الغرب عندما صحا في فجر نهضته علي الثقافة العربية، فنقلها مترجمة إلي لغاته واستعان بها كثيراً في تقدمه، وترجمة أفضل الكتب الاجنبية خير عون لنا كي نقطع الشوط بسرعة ثم نواصل تقدمنا العلمي الذاتي مع وبعد ذلك.
ولم اجد بين المؤلفات الفلكية العالمية ما هو اكثر فائدة من كتاب الف باء الفلك الذي قام بتأليفه كل من أ. فايجرت استاذ الفلك بجامعة هامبروج (ألمانيا الغربية) وهـ. تسمرمان استاذ الفلك بجامعة فريدريك شيلر (ألمانيا الشرقية)، وحتي تتحقق هذه الموسوعة أكبر نفع للقارىء في منطقتنا العربية، فقد تصرفت فيها يعتمد علي مكان المشاهدة بحيث يصبح ملائماً لخطوط عرض كل البلاد العربية بدلا مما كان عليه الاصل لوسط أوروبا.
