يشكل الإرث الثقافي الشرقي أشكالاً عديدة من المعرفة والعقيدة والفن والقانون والأخلاق والأعراف والقيم، بالإضافة إلى مخزون لغوي أسطوري كبير. حول هذا المحور تأتي الدراسة في هذا الكتاب التي يحصرها الباحث بالتراث الفكري الأسطوري لبلاد الرافدين تحديداً وذلك لم يمنعه من التطرق إلى أساطير شرقية أخرى، بل وحتى أساطير غير الشرقية إن لزم الأمر. وهدفه تكوين فكرة عن أساطير الخلق والتكوين التي ابتدعها الرافديون خلال تاريخهم العريق، وبالتالي بعض النظم والتكوينات السياسية التي عرفتها بلاد الرافدين! وبعضاً من تأملاته وخواطره وأفكاره.
فالأسطورة بكونيتها وشموليتها كما يقول الدكتور (طيب تيزيني): يمثلان نسقاً من أنساق التطور الذهني الفكري للمجتمعات... وهما بصفتهما موقفاً نظرياً من العالم، كانتا متشابكتين بالوظيفة الأولى للأسطورة، وظيفة التكريس للسلطة الأرستقراطية البيروقراطية ولوحدة المجتمع المتمايزة...) إذاً فالفكر الأسطوري الرافدي والذي يبدو وكأنه كان سابقاً على الفلسفة ربما كان مساعداً أيضاً في رسم صورة تاريخية عن الوضع السياسي والاقتصادي والإداري، سيما وأن الكثيرين لا يجدون ذلك البون الواسع بين التاريخ والأسطورة مع وجود اختلاف بهذا الشأن.
التجربة التاريخية لسكان بلاد الرافدين تجربة عاطفية مليئة بصراعات داخلية وفيضانات دجلة والفرات ووجدت اساطيرهم مخرجاً لها في الصراع الكوني والتنظيم الالهي للكون.
ولأن كانت قد عالجت هذه الأساطير اصل الكون ونظامه كحل شامل ووصلت الى ذروتها في "إينوما إيليش" فإنها عالجت الأصل والنظام، ولم تعالج التقييم او عدالة نظام الكون.
