اختار هذا الكتاب (الكوميديا والمسرج المصري المعاصر) للناقد والكاتب المسرحي ( أمير سلامة) معالجة الكوميديا في جانبيها التنظيري والتطبيقي معاً. ففيما يتعلق بالنظرية يضم الكتاب دراسات نقدية قام الكاتب بإعدادها أو عرضها أو ترجمتها من أحدث ما وصل إلى القارىء العربي في اللغة الإنجليزي. وفيما يتعلق بالتطبيق يقدم الكتاب دراسات تطبيقية أجراها الكاتب على بعض أهم العروض المصرية في الفترة من (1975-2000) فمثل خلاصة القضايا المثارة في حقل الكوميديا المصرية وعلى الأخص المدى العريض لعنصر الضحك في ارتباطه بعنصر الدراما في العروض المسرحية، فهذا الكتاب لا يقدم توثيقاً تاريخياً لحال الكوميديا المصرية (في القطاعين العام والخاص) على مدى عقدين ونصف بقدر ما يقدم تصوراً نقدياً لها خلال تلك الحقبة الهامة من تاريخ مصر الحافلة بالعديد من الأحداث المحورية سياسيا واجتماعيا.
