فدراسة المسرح عند شعب من الشعوب قد تكشف في أغلب الأحيان عن أصل ذلك الشعب وكيانه واتجاهات المتعددة وميوله ونزواته وبطموحاته. بل أنها قد تكشف أيضاً عن تطوره السياسي والديني والاجتماعي والاقتصادي، من هنا كانت الدراسات المسرحية ذات أهمية بالغة، وفي هذا الكتيب يحاول المؤلف أن يتناول بالبحث أصل المسرح المصري المعاصر وشكله، متتبعاً مراحل الاحتكاك الحضاري بين مصر وأهل الشرق ثم بين مصر وأهل القرب، مع دراسته لبعض رواد المسرح المصري المعاصر.
