تعد هذه المجموعة القصصية (ذات مساء) ثالث محاولات المؤلف أمير سلامة في معالجة الكتابة القصصية، بدأها بمجموعة الدوافع الخفية 1966، ثم رواية السطور الخالية 1980. وذات مساء كتبت على فترات متباعدة، وقد بدأ نشر أول هذه القصص "حنا" في مجلة الجديد عام 1975، ثم توالى نشر بعضها منذ ذلك التاريخ في صحيفتي الأهرام والأخبار وفي مجلات أخرى هي القصة والثقافة الجديدة. وبعض قصص المجموعة ينشر لأول مرة في هذا الكتاب وهي بالتحديد أغرب الطباع وذات مساء وحفل تكريم وأنا وزوجتي والجيران. والمؤلف يبرز في هذه المجموعة اهتمامه أن يكون حوار الشخصيات دائماً هو حوارها المعتاد في الحياة. ويبدو أن ينطلق في ذلك عن قناعة أن اللغة سواء كتبت بالفصحى أو العامية ليست لها وظيفة خارج تجسيد البناء القصصي وبلورة المعنى العام. فقضية المعنى بأبعاده المتعددة هي لب وجوهر هذه التجربة الجمالية التي تغطي العديد من أزمات الإنسان المصري المعاصر الحياتية خاصة ما يتعلق منها بشخوص الطبقة الوسطى: أحزانها وأفراحها.. أحلامها وإحباطاتها، ما أمسكت به وما أفلت منها وأصبح سراباً ذات مساء.
