لم تظهر الدراسات المقارنة على نحو منظم إلا في النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر والأدب المقارن فرع من تاريخ الأدب انبثق عنه وأصبح محوراً من محاور الدراسة الأدبية استقل بمعالجة المؤثرات الأجنبية بالدرجة الأولى إن يحصر اهتمامه بفرعين أساسيين هما الأدب العالمي والأدب العام لقد كرس الدكتور محمد زكريا عناني هذا الكتاب القيم ليقدم مادة علمية مؤثرة تتوضح للقارئ من خلالها المفاهيم والمصطلحات فيصبح من ليسر عليه أن يلم بما كتب حول الموضوع.
وقد جاء الكتاب في ثلاثة أبواب الباب الأول تناول التعريف بمصطلح الأدب المقارن ومدارسه وقدن رؤية تاريخية شاملة للتعريف بكل مدرسة. أما الباب الثاني فقد كرسه المؤلف للبحث في ظواهر مقارنة في الأدب العربي، إذ يوضح أن العرب لم يكونوا يعيشون في حالة من البداوة والعزلة على نحو ما يبدو من خلال بعض الكتابات، كما كانت لديهم ظواهر حضارية وأدبية ذات خصائص متميزة. ويعرض الباب الثالث لدراسة المذاهب الأدبية الأوروبية وما لها من أثر في الأدب العربي كالكلاسيكية المحدثة، والرومانتيكية والواقعية والرمزية.
والكتاب في مجمله يسعى لتحريك مفهوم عربي للأدب المقارن رغم أنه في ظاهره يسعى للتأريخ والتسجيل، كما هو ملاحظة من أبوابه التي ازدحمت بدراسات عن الأدب القديم والعصر العباسي ثم الأندلسي فالحروب الصليبية. والمؤلف يؤكد أن العقلية العربية استوعبت العديد من عطاء الحضارات الأخرى وأضافت إليه ونقحت فيه بحيث سرت فيه لدماء العربية.
