يعالج الكاتب من خلال هذه الدراسة إشكالية مدى تأثير العامل المذهبي في سياسة إيران الخارجية تجاه العراق خلال الفترة التي أعقبت الإجتياح الأمريكي للعراق عام 2003 إلى غاية سنة 2013.
يبدأ الكاتب دراسته بمحاولة توضيح معالم ومبادئ السياسة الخارجية الإيرانية، وتبيان أهمية إيران الإقليمية كذلك، مع ذكر طبيعة النظام السياسي الإيراني، ومدى إرتباط العامل المذهبي بهذا النظام، ثم ينتقل الكاتب إلى دراسة الأسس العقائدية والفكرية للسياسة الخارجية الإيرانية، وكيف انعكست هذه الأسس المذهبية على السلوك الخارجي لدولة إيران من خلال إستراتيجيتي: تصدير الثورة والهلال الشيعي الخصيب.
لينتقل في الفصل الثالث إلى التركيز على العراق كمجال حيوي لتجسيد أهداف إيران ذات العلاقة بالمذهب، بداية بتبيان مدى أهمية العراق بالنسبة لإيران كدولة وللشيعة كمذهب ديني، وكيف تمكنت إيران بالأدوات الصلبة والناعمة معاً ذات البعد المذهبي من التغلغل في الدولة العراقية بعد عام 2003، بشكل أدى إلى إختلال في أمن هذه الدولة بشكل واضح.
ووصل الباحث في آخر دراسته إلى نتيجة تتمثل في أنّ المذهب تجلى كأداة أكثر منه كغاية في السياسة الخارجية الإيرانية تجاه العراق إبان فترة 2003- 2013، وأنّ الأبعاد القومية والإقتصادية وغيرها؛ هي أبعاد من الضروري تخصيص دراسات أخرى لها من أجل تبيان مدى أهميتها في السياسة الخارجية لدولة إيران؛ بما أنّ العامل المذهبي وما ارتبط به تجلى كذريعة أو كأداة فقط لتحقيق غايات إيرانية أسمى.
