اشتد الخلاف بين الباحثين حول جذور الخط العربي، وظهر بذلك مذهبان مختلفان، وهما المذهب التوفيقي والمذهب الإصطلاحي. المذهب التوفيقي يعيد وضع الخط إلى إيحاء من الله، فقد قال بعض الباحثين القدامى أن أول من وضع الخط العربي والسرياني وسائر الكتب آدم عليه السلام قبل موته بثلاثمائة سنة، وقال أحمد بن فارس أن الخط توقيف وذلك لظاهر قوله عز وجل: "إقرأ باسم ربك الذي خلق ..." [سورة العلق 1-8]. ويذهب بعض القائلين إلى أن النبي إدريس هو أول من علم الحروف العربية عن طريق الوحي. أما المذهب الإصطلاحي فيقول إن الحروف العربية هي من وضع البشر (...)، ورأي آخر يقول إن أول من وضع الخط العربي ستة أشخاص وهم: أبجد وهوز وحطي وكلمن وسعفص وقرشت، فوضعوا الكتابة والخط على أسمائهم، فلما وجدوا في الألفاظ حروفاً ليست في أسمائهم ألحقوها بها وسموها الروادف.
