يقصد بالتنوع الحيوي المجموعة المتباينة من الحياة على كوكب الأرض، بتنوعها البيولوجي، إن عدد الأنواع من النباتات والحيوانات والكائنات الدقيقة، والتنوع الهائل من الجينات في هذه الأنواع، ومختلف المنظومات البيئية (الإيكولوجية) على كوكب الأرض مثل الصحاري والغابات الاستوائية والشعاب المرجانية كجزء من الأرض تعتبر تنوعًا بيولوجيًا. فالاختلاف هو سنة الخلق وسمة المخلوقات، ومع أن التنوع الحيوي يساهم في زيادة الإنتاج إلا أنه انكمش كثيرًا في العقود الأخيرة نتيجة للممارسات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية للإنسان. ولمس الإنسان آثار الانكماش في التنوع في صورة التغيرات المناخية وزيادة معدلات الفيضانات والتصحر والانبعاث الحراري وغضب الطبيعة في صورة أعاصير وتسونوميات وحرائق الغابات. وقد أدرك المجتمع البشري ضرورة الحفاظ على التنوع الحيوي من الاضمحلال حيث يستمد الإنسان منه مأكله وملبسه ودواءه ومتعته. وإدراكًا لهذا ولأهميته في تحقيق التنمية المستدامة للمجتمعات فقد أنشأ المجتمع البشري الجمعيات والمؤسسات الدولية والإقليمية والمحلية وسن القوانين والتشريعات لصيانة هذا التنوع.
