تعد سنوات حكم الخديوي إسماعيل (1863-1879م) نقطة تحوّل هامة وبارزة في تاريخ مصر، لما اكتنفها من أحداث وأعمال هامة، وقد تناولت العديد من الدراسات التاريخية، التطورات الإقتصادية والسياسية والعسكرية في تلك الآونة، إلا أنها أغفلت نصيب صاحب تلك الإنجازات. من هنا جاء هذا الكتاب ليضيء عن ضخصية الخديوي إسماعيل الخديوي المميزة وعن حياته وزوجاته وأولاده ومسيرته منذ توليه الحكم في مصر وحتى وفاته ولتسليط الضوء على مرحلة الخديوي التاريخية، وبيان ما قام به من أعمال بارزة، أكمل بها نهضة محمد علي باشا، بالإضافة إلى تسليط الكتاب الضوء على حجم التكالب الإستعماري على مصر في تلك المرحلة، وبيان دور الخديوي إسماعيل ومحاولاته المستمرة من أجل الحصول على الإستقلال التام لمصر وتحقيق السيادة الوطنية.
يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب الدكتور هادي المعموري: "أن الخديوي إسماعيل كان ضحية مشروعه النهضوي الكبير الذي أجهض الأحلام الإستعمارية البريطانية – الفرنسية، وشكل خطراً وشيكاً على الإثنين في تحدي لنفوذهما التنامي في إفريقيا، في وقت لم يكن يسمح له أو لغيره بذلك، إذ كان التنافس الإستعماري على أشده في افريقيا وكانت مصر هي بؤرة الصراع الدولي، لذلك عمدت تلك الدول على تحجيم دوره بكل الوسائل والأساليب التي يستجيبها النهج الإستعماري المعهود، فوجدت فرنسا أن السبيل الأوحد لإيقاف مسعى الخديوي إسماعيل بإبعاد النفوذ الأجنبي عن بلاده، هو بإقالته، بينما وجدت بريطانيا أن مصلحتها في بقاء الخديوي بسبب نفوذها الكبير في مصر، مما جعل من خلعه شأن إستعماري، إذ تحكمت به مصالح الدولتين في إدارة الصراع الدولي آنذاك. وبمؤامرة واضحة ومكشوفة أصبح الخديوي إسماعيل خارج عرشه، بل خارج بلاده (...) وبعد ما قضى نحو (16) عاماً في منفاه، لم يعد إسماعيل إلى مصر إلا ميتاً، حيث دفن في مسجد الرفاعي (القاهرة) وظل حتى وفاته ينعم بلقب أغنى رجال مصر".
