يدور موضوع الكتاب حول اكتشاف الرحالة الغربيون الذين جاءوا إلى الشرق (الآثار القديمة) في ست حضارات سادت التاريخ القديم والمعاصر؛ وهي مما اشتهر عند الكلدانيين والأشوريين والبابليين والكنعانيين والفلسطينيين والعبرانيين.
في الكتاب يبرز بوضوح أن المستشرقين الذين درسوا الآثار القديمة قسموها بحسب القبائل واللغات ففي "آثار الفينيقيين" ويقصد بها بلاد فينيقية ولبنان أن كتابتهم هجائية كلغاتنا اليوم، وإليهم نسب اختراع حروف الهجاء، واشتهر بكشف آثارهم "أرنست رينان" الفرنسي الذي جاء لبنان سنة (1860م) وطاف سورية ولبنان، فعثر على هيكل أدونيس في جبيل، ومعابد الزهرة وبعل في صيدا وصور، وآثار طرطوس وأرواد وغيرها. ومن "آثار الكلدانيين والآشوريين والبابليين" برز الخط الهيروغليف المصري والكتابة المسمارية على الآثار، وأقدم من كتب الكلدان وأول من حل رموز المسمارية، كروتفند الألماني سنة (1802م) ، وفي نينوى جُمعت ثلاثة آلاف قطعة من آثار الكتابات وغيرها، مما له شأن كبير في معرفة تاريخ القبائل ...، وأما "آثار الكنعانيين والفلسطينيين والعبرانيين" فكان من أقدم آثار هذه البلاد، تمثال ملك سيحون، أو ميشاع ملك مؤاب، الذي اكتشفه سولسي سنة (1851م) ، في محلة (رجم العبد) ، بين مأدبا وسيحون كما اكتشفت في نفس السنة "أطلال أربولي" قرب الكرك، كما ظهرت في أرض مؤاب أخربة كثيرة، فيها نقود وأوانٍ خزفية وزجاجية ... إلى آخر ذلك من اكتشافات يذكرها الكتاب بالشواهد والتواريخ وهي مما اختزنته كتب الآثار والرحلات، من تفاصيل وافية عن آثار تلك البلاد، والتي نُقل غالبيتها من مواطنها الأصلية إلى متاحف الآثار في أوروبا والأستانة فيما بعد.
