إن من يأتي من جنوب الأرض كمن ينحدر من قرص شمس، لا يتآلف بسهولة مع كثافة الغيم أو يكتفي بخفق ضوء خفيف، إلا أن الكاتب صبحي مصطفى أيوب بدا متآلفاً مع شمس بلاده الجديدة، من دون أن ينسى زمنه الجميل، فيقف في "دموع العصافير" على حافة الذاكرة، يستنطق الأمكنة والأزمنة وحتى الأشجار والعصافير. ويبدو أن الكتابة في مجال القصة القصيرة قد أغوته بعوالمها، وأسرته بأسلوبها، فعرف كيف يجعلها فناً متقبلاً من طرف قرائه ومحبيه، يقول من خلالها ما استقر في القلب، وما أودعته السنون، فأجاد صنعة وإبداعاً، وهو يراقب حال ذلك الرجل الذي فضّل البقاء بجانب العصافير على البشر، يبث إليها مشاعره "واعلموا أني أعيش مع الذكريات وأستعيد حلوها وأتجاهل ما استطعت مرّها، فأنا في النهاية إنسان من لحم ودم ومشاعر. ولا أخفي عليكم بعض آرائي بشأنكم يا معشر الطيور وأحدّث نفسي المتعبة وأقول: هناك جمعيات كثيرة في العالم يطلقون عليها تسميات مختلفة ... فلماذا وألف لماذا لا توجد جمعيات خاصة للرفق بالطيور، وتمنع منعاً باتاً وضع العصافير في الأقناص، وأن تفتح أبواب تلك الأقفاص في العالم لتنطلق تلك العصافير ...". بهذا الحس الوجداني يكتب صبحي أيوب، يناجي الطيور ويبتعد عن البشر، كلما قرأت صفحة من صفحاته، تبحر أكثر في متن النص، إنها رحلة روحية، وتأملات، متلفعة بثوب رومانسي شفيف ممتزج بمرارة الواقع الصادم، يطرح من خلالها هموم الذات، بطرق غير مباشرة، حتى لا تبقى حبيسة صدره، أو حبيسة الكتاب، ولتخرج منها بعص القصص التي نراها كل يوم ونغض الطرف عنها.
يضم الكتاب خمسة قصص قصيرة جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: 1- من يطعم العصافير، 2- مكتب المتاعب، 3- لقاء في الجنة، 4- شكري المنسي، 5- غريب.
